Substation Gantries multi-sided steel, 35–500 kV
We design and manufacture steel multi-sided gantries for open switchyards based on bent steel poles instead of outdated typical solutions. We also check typical gantries against the current regulations. Multi-sided gantries start from UAH 85,000 each including VAT, typical ones from UAH 80,000.

Advantages of multi-sided substation gantries
Individual calculation
The gantry is designed for a specific substation rather than picked from an outdated album of typical designs.
Code compliance
Designs follow the current edition of the Electrical Installation Code (PUE) and other current regulations.
Strength and durability
Bent multi-sided shafts with hot-dip galvanising resist weather and corrosion.
Easy transport
Shafts travel on standard trailers and are installed in sections.
Simple installation
The shafts are set on the foundation anchor bolts by crane, then the crossbeam is lifted and joined to them at the flanges.
Small land footprint
A compact support base eases substation reconstruction.
Designed to current regulations
Including the current edition of the Electrical Installation Code (PUE)

Substation gantries: technical specifications
POLYGONAL’s unified solutions by voltage class
For 110 kV we have developed 12 gantry types (Y1–Y12) with 1–5 bays, 9 to 45 m long. For 150 kV — 7 types (Y1–Y7) with 1–3 bays, 11.1 to 33.3 m long. The types differ in the number of bays and in the ground-wire posts and lightning rods fitted for direct-strike protection.
Full dimensions and fittings for each type are in the catalogues 110 kV Switchyard Gantries and 150 kV Switchyard Gantries.
Typical gantry designs
Unified gantries were produced to typical designs (series) of power-engineering design institutes:
- 3.407.2-162 «Unified steel switchyard gantries 35–150 kV for ordinary and northern regions»
- 3.407.9-149 «Unified reinforced concrete and steel switchyard gantries 220–330 kV»
- 3.407.9-161 «Unified gantry structures for 500 kV switchyards»
Marks, types and masses of typical gantries are in typical switchyard gantries 35–500 kV. Our unified solutions for 110 and 150 kV are in the For Designers section: 110 kV gantries and 150 kV gantries.
Why typical gantries must be recalculated
Typical unified gantries were designed to the standards in force at the time, so they cannot be used without recalculation against current regulations, including the current edition of PUE.
For a specific substation it is most rational to modify the unified structures: strengthen individual elements, change the design and so on, with calculations confirming that the changes comply with the regulations.
POLYGONAL performs this check and refines the area of application of typical gantries.
Substation lighting
Floodlight masts are used to light substations. We make them at the same plant.
Multi-sided and reinforced-concrete gantries compared
Reinforced-concrete posts appear in the albums of typical designs, including for 220–330 kV. Criteria:
- service life: concrete deteriorates from frost, cracking and reinforcement corrosion, while a multi-sided post lasts as long as its zinc coating (the design service life of our 110 and 150 kV solutions is 50 years);
- weight: a steel post is lighter than a concrete one of the same load capacity;
- transport: a concrete post is a heavy, long load; a multi-sided post goes on a trailer, taller ones in sections;
- maintenance: concrete is checked for cracks and exposed reinforcement, a steel post for its zinc coating and bolt tightness.
Installing a gantry: general notes
Installation is done by a contractor to a work execution plan. Key points:
- the post is lifted by crane at the slinging points on the working drawings, without damaging the zinc coating;
- before the final bolt tightening, the posts are plumbed and set to the design spacing: a small deviation at the base grows into a larger offset at the top;
The step-by-step order of installing a gantry (slinging, setting the shafts and crossbeam, tightening the bolts) is in Installing a Substation Gantry: Slinging, Setting the Shafts and Crossbeam, Tightening the Bolts.
What determines the price of substation gantries
We calculate the price for a substation project. It depends on:
- voltage class (35–150, 220–330, 500 kV) and gantry layout;
- spans, heights, number of columns and beams;
- design loads and region;
- foundations, coating, delivery and installation (its cost is calculated separately each time; installation is carried out by a licensed construction partner company).
How to order substation gantries
- Send the substation design data: voltage, layout drawings, loads.
- We carry out the calculation and propose a multi-sided design or a modification of a standard gantry.
- We calculate the price and lead time.
Sizes of polygonal portals for 35 and 110 kV
The ПС-35…-Б series (six marks) covers 35 kV switchyards and the ПС-110…-Б series (thirteen) 110 kV. Height to the crossarm, bay length and the numbers of ground-wire posts and lightning rods for each mark are in the tables of Multi-Sided Switchyard Gantries 35–150 kV: Sizes, Heights, Bays. Layouts and heights not listed there are designed individually.

What Is a Substation Gantry: Purpose and Voltage Classes
A substation gantry is the steel support structure at the open-air switchyard of a substation. Below: what it is for and which types there are.
Restoring Damaged Substation Switchyard Portals
A substation’s switchyard portal is a critical structure: damage to even part of it halts the substation’s operation. We manufacture elements for urgent restoration and dispatch them for installation.

Besides switchyard portals, we design and manufacture protective structures for open switchyard (ORU) equipment at substations — for extra protection of critical equipment.
