Who needs equipment for pole production

This page is for investors starting a new plant and owners of workshops expanding production of poles or road safety barriers. Typical cases:

  • a new plant for multi-sided lighting, telecom or power line poles, from cutting to galvanising;
  • an existing workshop that lacks one stage: a press, welding or its own galvanising;
  • a company adding road safety barriers to its range.

We make bent multi-sided poles ourselves and galvanise them in our own bath, so we know the technology from the inside. The equipment below is what we offer customers: we select its composition to suit your products, output and floor space. A step-by-step guide to launching production (equipment, workshop, staff, stages): How to Launch Multi-sided Pole Production.

What we offer

More: blank cutting, welding lines, seamless pole line and robotic cell, road barrier lines, galvanising plant equipment, process operations on the galvanising line.

What stages make up the technology of a multi-sided pole plant

A multi-sided pole is bent from a flat trapezoid: the difference between the widths of the bases gives the taper, and the bends form the faces. From sheet to galvanised pole:

StageWhat happensEquipment we offer
CuttingCoil or sheet is cut into flat trapezoidsTrapezoid cutting line, automatic plasma cutting unit
BendingThe trapezoid is bent on a press, bend after bend, until all faces are formedHydraulic presses of 1250–2000 t for sheet 3.0–25.0 mm thick; automatic marking and positioning system for trapezoids
Longitudinal seamThe edges of the bent blank are welded along the full length; large diameters are assembled from several blanksAutomatic machines for single-seam poles 60–650 mm in diameter, and machines for larger ones
Flange and openingsA flange is welded to the base (poles set in the ground have none) and hatches are cutA robot with a plasma torch, base plate welding stations
GalvanisingChemical preparation, immersion in molten zinc, coolingGalvanising line: chemical preparation tanks, drying oven, galvanising furnace

The composition of the equipment is set for your products. The 3.0–25.0 mm range refers to the press: other stages have narrower thickness ranges (for example, the trapezoid cutting line for coil handles 3–8 mm and the marking system 3.0–12.0 mm), so for thick-walled poles the composition of the stages is specified separately.

How is quality controlled at each stage?

Control spans the whole chain. In our workshop it takes the form of incoming inspection of the metal before it goes into work, dimensional checks on parts and on the assembled product, visual and ultrasonic inspection of welds, and zinc thickness measurement after galvanising. More: Quality control of steel structures.

Why are long poles built from sections?

The section length is usually limited by the sheet length, the press bend length, the size of the galvanising bath and transport, so longer poles are assembled from sections with a telescopic joint. More: multi-sided poles and designing for galvanising.

How cooperation runs from the first enquiry to start-up

The stages are the same as in our turnkey engineering offer for galvanising plants, pole production and road safety barriers:

  • site survey: we visit the customer and assess the conditions on site;
  • equipment selection for your production;
  • complete design of the plant or line;
  • supervised installation of the equipment, start-up and staff training.

It is better to build equipment maintenance in before start-up: Equipment maintenance. A general overview of the equipment, workshop and staff needed to start is in How to Launch Multi-sided Pole Production.

What to prepare for a calculation

The main data is enough for a preliminary proposal. Leave blank whatever you do not know and we will clarify. It also helps to name the utilities on site (electricity, natural gas).

Equipment and engineering: frequently asked questions

What products are the pole production lines suitable for?

Round and multi-sided steel poles for lighting, telecom and power lines. Road safety barriers are covered separately.

Can I buy only a press or only a galvanising line?

Yes, presses, galvanising lines and barrier equipment can be considered separately. A whole plant or line is turnkey engineering.

Is it worth building my own galvanising line for small volumes?

A line of your own pays off when the flow of articles is steady and large enough. For small or irregular volumes, galvanising can be ordered as a service with no minimum order: Hot-dip galvanising.

What does cooperation include besides the equipment itself?

A site survey, equipment selection, design, supervised installation, start-up and staff training; the scope depends on the task.

How much does a line cost and how soon can it be started?

Price and lead time are given after we calculate them from your data; they depend on the equipment, output and site conditions. We do not publish indicative equipment prices. More on cost drivers and start-up stages: How to Launch Multi-sided Pole Production.
