Stadium lighting and sports grounds

We design and manufacture floodlight masts for stadiums, football pitches, tennis courts and other sports grounds, from a school yard to a national-level arena. The lighting calculation and floodlight selection are free of charge; we also supply the floodlights, and a partner company installs the masts across Ukraine.

Advantages

About the masts

Shaft from sections

Multi-sided steel sections up to 12 m long are easy to transport. The assembled mast is lifted by crane onto the foundation anchor bolts.

Hot-dip galvanising

To DSTU EN ISO 1461:2024, coating thickness 80–120 µm.

Crown for floodlights

Fixed on the top section or mobile, lowered with a winch, so the floodlights can be serviced at ground level without special equipment.

Safe access

A ladder with a hatch that locks; the inspection hatch closes with a security bolt.

Documents

Every mast comes with a passport, an operating manual and accompanying documentation.

Free calculation

We carry out the lighting calculation and floodlight selection ourselves, free of charge.

How a football pitch is lit

Unlike street or park lighting, sports lighting is never an off-the-shelf solution. Besides the power and the number of floodlights, the design takes into account the architecture of the venue, where the masts can stand and how the light is controlled. There are two layouts: masts at the corners of the pitch, or a linear system along the touchlines.

Masts at the corners are the most common and the most economical option. A linear system along the touchlines gives more even light but costs more, and the masts there are not below 15 m. Masts must not stand in a 5 m strip around the pitch. The layouts and permitted places are covered in the article Sports Lighting: Competition Classes and Requirements.

Mast height and number of masts

The mast height is set by the angle α between the horizontal and the line from the centre of the pitch to the lowest row of floodlights: it must be at least 25°. For a football pitch, masts below 15 m are not recommended. The formula and a worked example are in the article Football Pitch and Tennis Court Lighting: Typical Mast Layouts.

We make masts up to 20 m in the PM range (12–20 m) and from 20 m up in the PMV range: 20, 24, 30 and 34 m. On our projects there are masts of 10, 16, 20 and 25 m, and heights outside these ranges are calculated for the specific site. The dimensions and loads of PM masts are in the article PM Floodlight Masts 12–20 m, and an example for a PMV is in 30 m Floodlight Mast.

Competition classes and illuminance requirements

Stadium lighting is divided into five classes, I to V, in two categories: competitions with colour television coverage (IV–V) and competitions and training without it (I–III).

Horizontal illuminance according to the FIFA guide to artificial lighting of football pitches.

A TV camera needs more light than the players do (from a long distance the ball looks very small, so spectators in the far seats need almost as much light as the cameras). That is why televised matches also have a vertical illuminance requirement, in planes perpendicular to the cameras’ lines of sight, and a stricter limit on non-uniformity: between points 5 m apart the illuminance gradient does not exceed 20% (55% without TV).

Uniformity, the glare rating (GR) and the light colour for each class are in the article Sports Lighting: Competition Classes and Requirements. For tennis, the European standard EN 12193 applies.

Lighting a school stadium or a neighbourhood pitch

At a school stadium or a neighbourhood pitch people play for recreation, without TV coverage. For training, the FIFA guide recommends an average of 75 lx, and for lower-league and club games, 200 lx. Uniformity and visual comfort still matter: the light should fall without harsh patches and without glare. Such pitches are usually in residential areas, so spill light should be kept as low as possible to avoid disturbing the residents.

Typical lighting layouts

These are examples of the equipment needed for a given illuminance. The final layout for your pitch comes from the calculation.

Tennis court lighting

A court is lit by four low masts. The European standard EN 12193 sets the minimum illuminance by class: 500, 300 and 200 lx for classes I, II and III; some national associations recommend other levels.

Masts at sports grounds

For stadiums and sports grounds we design masts for a specific illuminance level, with the architecture of the venue in mind.

Mast height and illuminance on our pitches

The parameters are taken from the page Completed Projects. The mast heights differ because each one was calculated for its own pitch.

The mast in Dnipro has a ladder, a fixed fall-protection system and folding rest platforms; in Kyiv the equipment is protected by a lightning rod.

Floodlights for stadiums

We select the floodlights on the basis of the lighting calculation and supply them together with the masts. A mast of the PMV range can carry up to 16 floodlights. The maximum windage area of the equipment is 3.2 m²; the calculation assumes a floodlight of up to 0.2 m² and 20 kg. The crown with the floodlights is either fixed or mobile: a mobile one is lowered with a winch, so the floodlights can be serviced at ground level without special equipment (more in the article Floodlight Masts with a Mobile Crown (PMK)).

How to order stadium lighting

How we work

You send the brief or the main parameters: the size of the pitch, the competition class, the city and the wind region.

For open-air sports venues we make a free lighting calculation for the pitch and a free pre-design calculation of the mast to your brief. Details are on the page Lighting Calculation.

Then we choose the floodlights to match the calculation, design, manufacture and galvanise the masts, and supply the floodlights.

The masts are handed over with a passport, an operating manual and accompanying documentation. A licensed construction partner company installs them across Ukraine.

The typical lead time is 3–4 weeks if the masts are not in stock. We confirm the exact lead time once the calculation is done.

Price guide

Prices as of September 2026, including VAT: PM masts of 12–20 m start at UAH 40,000 each, multi-sided PMV masts at UAH 159,000 each. The final price depends on the height, the number and make of the floodlights, the wind region and the configuration. For what goes into the price, see the article 30 m Floodlight Mast.

Questions

Stadium lighting FAQ

How many floodlights does a football pitch need?

The typical layouts with 2 kW floodlights use 14 for 180 lx, 16 for 200 lx, 28 for 350 lx and 40 for 500 lx. Our example calculation with four masts uses 56 LED floodlights of 600 W each (average illuminance 358 lx). The exact number is determined by a calculation for your pitch.

How many masts and floodlights does a tennis court need?

Four masts 8–12 m tall. For 200 lx: four 1 kW floodlights; for 300 lx: eight 1 kW floodlights; for 500 lx: eight 1.5 kW floodlights (8 m masts), eight 2 kW floodlights (10 m masts) or twelve 2 kW floodlights (12 m masts). The European standard EN 12193 sets a minimum of 500, 300 and 200 lx for classes I, II and III.

Do I need a separate lighting design?

For large stadiums, yes: every design is different. We do the lighting calculation and the choice of floodlights ourselves and free of charge, and for open-air venues we also make the pre-design calculation of the mast to your brief at no cost.

Do you supply the floodlights?

Yes. We choose the floodlights from the lighting calculation and supply them together with the masts.

How much does stadium lighting cost?

The cost covers masts, floodlights, foundations, delivery and installation. Indicative prices for the masts (incl. VAT, as of September 2026): PM masts of 12–20 m from UAH 40,000 each, multi-sided PMV masts from UAH 159,000 each. The final price for your pitch is given after the calculation, and the calculation itself is free.

How long does it take to make the masts?

The typical lead time is 3–4 weeks if the masts are not in stock. We confirm the exact lead time once the calculation is done.

Who installs the masts?

A licensed construction partner company, anywhere in Ukraine. We manufacture and supply the masts and the floodlights.

How long does a mast last?

The design service life is 40 years; the structure is protected by hot-dip galvanising.

Need lighting for your pitch?

Send the size of the ground, the competition class and the city. The lighting calculation is free. We will calculate the mast and come back with the price and the production time.
