We make fixed and portable outdoor flagpoles for residential, commercial and government sites based on bent multi-sided shafts. We take your individual needs into account and deliver to the construction site.

Flagpoles
Applications

Types of flagpoles

A flagpole is a way to show pride in national symbols, display a brand and mark a territory.

Commercial and government flagpoles

From 6 to 70 m high: larger height, diameter and wall thickness for wind resistance.

Flagpoles for private homes

Including the steel spinning flagpole: in two parts, the upper section turns on ball bearings and keeps the flag from wrapping.

Fixed and portable

Different flagpole types depending on where and how they are used.

Advantages

Advantages of steel flagpoles

Vandal-resistant

The flag halyard system is protected against unauthorised access.

Maintenance-free

Sealed ball bearings in the rotating units are designed for more than 10 years of operation without additional maintenance.

Easy fixing

A universal fixing system allows different types of base and simplifies installation.

Simple installation

The anchor cage is cast into the foundation in advance, and its anchors match the holes in the pole’s base flange. A tall flagpole is usually assembled from sections on the ground and lifted by crane.

Wear and corrosion resistance

Hot-dip galvanised or painted; custom colours are available to order.

From 6 to 70 m

Commercial and government flagpoles range from 6 to 70 m. Our own examples include flagpoles of 30 and 42 m.

Flagpole parameters: what drives the design

There is no single “height – diameter – wall thickness” table: the sizes depend on the flag, the wind region and the soil, and are set by calculation for each site. Below are reference points from our own materials and what each parameter changes.

ParameterReference valueWhat it determines
Height6–70 m; examples we have manufactured are 30 m and 42 mShaft length, the division into sections, the erection method, and whether obstruction lights are needed (for very tall flagpoles; the requirement depends on the location and is set by the siting project)
FlagLength roughly a quarter to a third of the height, as a guide; 6×10 m on a 30 m flagpole (about a third), 6×9 m on a 42 m flagpole (about a fifth)Wind load on the flag, and with it the shaft diameter, wall thickness and foundation size
Wind regionCharacteristic wind pressure value W0 under DBN V.1.2-2:2006: Kyiv 0.37 kPa, Kharkiv 0.43 kPa, Odesa 0.46 kPa, Lviv 0.52 kPaThe design wind load on the shaft and the flag
Diameter and wall thicknessNot fixed: selected by calculation for the height, the flag size and the wind regionWind resistance and the weight of the structure
Lifting mechanismNone, manual (a winch or a halyard inside the shaft) or electricEquipment inside the shaft, an inspection hatch where needed, and the amount of servicing
BaseReinforced concrete foundation with an anchor cage made of round barFoundation size and depth, which depend on the wind load and the soil; there is no universal table

A 42 m flagpole we manufactured has a remote-controlled electric lift, a device that turns the flag to follow the wind, and obstruction lights.

Specifications

Flagpoles: technical specifications

How flagpoles are made

We use bent multi-sided steel shafts with high resistance to weather. The main stages:

  • choosing the material: for flagpoles 20, 30, 40 and 50 m high we usually use steel sheet of grades S245, S345
  • making the multi-sided shaft of the required diameters and length
  • making the flag raising mechanism
  • making the foundation anchor cage from round steel
Coating and colour

Flagpoles are made of steel and coated with hot-dip zinc or varnish. Most coatings come in special anti-corrosion colours; individual colours can be specified by the customer.

Wall thickness and diameter

The wall thickness and diameter are chosen to give the required wind resistance for the specific installation site.

Installing tall flagpoles

Installing a tall flagpole is a complex technical process: it needs suitable equipment, qualified specialists and compliance with safety rules. The main stages:

  • choosing the site: height, visibility and safety are taken into account;
  • preparing the ground: earthworks and the foundation;
  • assembling the flagpole, usually on the ground;
  • lifting with a crane or an aerial lift, observing all safety rules;
  • fixing it securely to the foundation with special fasteners;
  • fitting the flag and checking: the flag must fly freely and the flagpole must not be damaged during erection.

Inspect the flagpole and its fixings at least once a year and after strong winds or other dangerous weather. Work on tall flagpoles is done in protective clothing and with safety equipment.

A tall flagpole with an electric drive: what it consists of

An example is a 42 m flagpole (FSh-42-3.II-54). This model consists of the following components:

  • a galvanised steel shaft of four pyramidal sections; in cross-section a regular 16-sided polygon, with the sections joined by telescopic joints;
  • a lockable inspection hatch: inside are an electric mini-hoist and space for the electrical panel;
  • a wire rope, a flag chain with weights and a limit stop that automatically stops the lift in the top position;
  • a rotating bracket: the flag turns through 360° with the wind;
  • three obstruction lights at the top, a lightning rod in the form of a coat of arms and 16 anchors in the foundation.

For more on the design, see the article How to Choose a Flagpole: Height, Flag Size, Lifting Mechanism; inspections and maintenance are covered in How to Install a Flagpole.

Which sites flagpoles suit

A flagpole marks a territory and underlines the status of a site, so it is usually ordered by institutions and businesses:

  • administrative buildings: council and government buildings where the State Flag of Ukraine is raised;
  • filling stations and roadside businesses: a tall flagpole is visible from far down the road;
  • enterprises, offices, production and commercial sites: the flag of the company or the country at the entrance or beside a building;
  • parks, squares and memorial complexes maintained by communities and institutions: the height is chosen for the size of the space and the viewing distance.
Wind region and shaft diameter

The flag acts as a sail, so wind is the main load on a flagpole. The starting value is the characteristic wind pressure value W0 for the location; for regional capitals it ranges from 0.37 to 0.52 kPa under DBN V.1.2-2:2006 (see the W0 table).

The design load is not W0 itself: W0 is multiplied by a coefficient for section shape, height, wind direction and the dynamic component, and by a reliability factor. So two flagpoles of the same height may end up with different diameters and wall thicknesses in different cities, or with different flags in one city.

For Lviv the starting pressure is about 1.4 times that for Kyiv, so there is no universal table of sizes. For flag size against height, see How to Choose a Flagpole.

Foundation and installation: what to settle in advance

The foundation and the anchor cage are selected together with the flagpole: the size and depth of the base depend on the height, the flag and the soil. If you have soil data for the site, send it with your request. The usual sequence during installation:

  • the cage’s anchors line up with the holes in the shaft’s base flange, and the cage is cast into the foundation before erection;
  • the shaft is erected once the foundation has reached at least 50% of its design strength; the slings are removed only after all the anchor nuts are fully tightened;
  • mounting bolts are recommended to be tightened to at least 15 kgf·m, and on galvanised structures the nuts are re-tightened a week later to compensate for the settling of the zinc.

Grounding, lightning protection and the full procedure are covered in How to Install a Flagpole.

Questions

Flagpoles: frequently asked questions

What heights are available?

Commercial and government flagpoles from 6 to 70 m. For private homes we select smaller heights.

What steel are the flagpoles made of?

For heights of 20, 30, 40 and 50 m, usually steel sheet of grades S245 and S345.

How is the flagpole protected against corrosion?

By hot-dip galvanising to DSTU EN ISO 1461:2024 or a paint/varnish coating. An individual colour can be ordered.

What is a spinning flagpole?

A two-part flagpole whose upper section turns on ball bearings, so the flag moves with the wind and does not wrap around the pole.

What do I need to send for a price calculation?

The height, the number of flags, the installation site (wind region) and the type of base. Leave blank whatever you do not know and we will clarify.

Is there a table of diameters and wall thicknesses by flagpole height?

No universal table exists: the diameter and wall thickness are set by calculation for the height, the flag size and the wind region. Two flagpoles of the same height in different places can have different shaft sizes.

Which wind region should I give in my request?

The name of the town or region is enough: we determine the wind region from the zoning map in DBN V.1.2-2:2006. The W0 values for regional capitals are in the article Wind Regions of Ukraine.

What kinds of site do steel flagpoles suit?

Administrative buildings, filling stations, businesses, parks and memorial complexes. The height, flag and lifting mechanism are chosen for the specific site.

Can I order a flagpole with illumination and an electric lift?

Yes. The flagpoles we have manufactured include 30 m flagpoles with night illumination of the flag and an electric lifting mechanism. We agree the details for your site.

What is a flagpole and what does it consist of?

A flagpole is a vertical support for raising a flag. Our outdoor flagpole is a steel multi-sided shaft with a flag-raising system and an anchor cage cast into the foundation. Fixed and portable versions are available, 6 to 70 m high.
