Power Line Protection Zone Calculator by Voltage Class
Choose the voltage class of the overhead line, and the calculator shows the width of the protection zone on each side of the outer conductor, the boundary of the sanitary protection zone, the minimum distance to an object in the zone and the vertical clearances. The values come from the PUE tables, 2026 edition.

Power line protection zone calculator
Choose the voltage class. If needed, enter the distance between the outer conductors, and the calculator adds the total width of the strip: the distance between the conductors plus the zone on both sides.
A preliminary calculation from the PUE tables. The conditions of a particular section (settlement, forest, conductor swing, local requirements) are set by the design.
Request a consultation on power line polesHow to use the calculator
- choose the line voltage class: from over 1 to 20 kV up to 750 kV;
- if you know the distance between the outer conductors, enter it: you will see the width of the whole strip;
- the result gives the protection zone width, the sanitary protection zone boundary (for 330 kV and above), the distance to an object in the zone and the vertical clearances in built-up areas.
Where the values come from
The values are from tables 2.5.32 and 2.5.33 of the Electrical Installation Rules (PUE), 2026 edition: the protection zone width, the minimum distances to objects and the vertical clearances. The distance is measured horizontally from the projection of the outer conductors at rest.
The full tables, explanations and examples are in the article power line protection zone by voltage class. For the span between poles, see power line span length, and for the kinds of line, what a power line is.
What the calculator does not account for
The calculator shows the standard values from the tables. The conditions of a particular section, including a settlement, forest, conductor swing and local requirements, are set by the design. Building near a line needs approval from the network owner.

Frequently asked questions about the power line protection zone
What is the protection zone width of a 110 kV line?
20 m on each side of the projection of the outer conductor, under table 2.5.32 of the PUE (2026 edition).
What is the protection zone measured from?
Horizontally from the projection of the outer conductors of the line at rest.
Can I build in the protection zone?
Construction in the protection zone is restricted. If an object is already in the zone, the PUE sets the smallest distance from the outer conductors at maximum swing to it; for 500 and 750 kV, objects in the zone are prohibited.
Why is there a sanitary protection zone for 330 kV and above?
For 330, 500 and 750 kV lines the PUE table additionally gives the boundary of the sanitary protection zone: 20, 30 and 40 m respectively.
Does the calculator replace a design?
No. It is a calculation from the PUE tables. The conditions of a particular section are set by the design and the network owner.
