What’s in the catalogue
The «TP-M6M40.20.01» catalogue is a unified design solution for steel multi-sided free-standing lightning masts 6–40 m high.
Inside: general notes and scope of application (sheets 2–3), design solutions, installation and safety (sheets 3–4), drawings for eight heights — 6, 10, 15, 20, 25, 30, 34.6 and 40 m — with foundation loads (sheets 4–11), and an order questionnaire (sheet 12).

N, Q, M — the loads at the foundation top (axial force, shear force, moment) for the design wind direction, from the TP-M6M40.20.01 catalogue.
Who it’s for
The masts protect open switchyards, electrical substations, construction sites, oil refineries, fuel stations, facilities storing explosives, biogas plants and industrial sites from lightning.
Suitable for wind regions 1–4, seismic intensity up to 6 points, and air temperatures from −40 to +40 °C.
How to order
Manufactured to TU U 25.1-39573934-002:2018. Fixed to the foundation through a flange; the foundation is designed individually for the geotechnical conditions of the site. Design service life is 50 years.
To order, state the height and installation site in the questionnaire (p. 12 of the catalogue) or in our technical specification form.
Worked example: reading the catalogue and choosing a size
The mark MO-40-4.II means a lightning mast 40 m high for wind region 4 and terrain type II (sheet 2, cl. 1.2). All drawings (sheets 4–11) carry the 4.II index; per sheet 2 (cl. 2.1–2.2) the masts are intended for wind regions 1–4 and terrain types II–IV, and the wind region and terrain type of the site are stated in the questionnaire (sheet 12).
Example: a 30 m mast is sheet 9 in the drawing list (sheet 1). It has three sections, anchor cage FPM-500-900 with 12 M30 anchors, and foundation-top loads of N = 12.96 kN, Q = 8.52 kN, M = 112 kN·m. How to read cage marks is explained in the article on foundation anchor cages.
By comparison, the 40 m mast (sheet 11) is 10 m taller, but its moment is 2.4 times larger (273.6 / 112 ≈ 2.44), with cage FPM-710-1040 and 16 M36 anchors. So it is better not to add height just in case: the foundation would have to carry a larger moment.
Structure, materials and calculation
| Element | What the catalogue specifies |
|---|---|
| Shaft cross-section | regular 16-, 12- or 8-sided polygon, depending on height |
| Section joint | telescopic |
| Steel | shaft — C245, flange — C345, anchor bolts — 09G2S or St3sp4-1GP |
| Calculation | static analysis in the SCAD Office software package |
From sheet 2 of the catalogue, cl. 3.1–3.4.
What to check when designing and ordering
- the questionnaire (sheet 12) has 12 items, including terrain type (I–IV), ground microrelief, wind region, seismicity on the MSK-64 scale, and minimum and maximum temperature; all fields are mandatory, and a dash is entered where data is not available;
- welded parts with cavities and pockets need process holes for the pickling solution and zinc to drain (sheet 2, cl. 3.3.7); see the rules for designing for galvanising;
- under the catalogue, installation must be carried out by a specialised organisation with suitable equipment and qualified staff, to a work execution plan (sheet 3, cl. 4.4–4.5);
- in service, tall vegetation within 1 m of the base outline is cleared and any damaged zinc coating is repaired (sheet 3, cl. 6.2–6.5).

Questions about the 6–40 m lightning masts
How is a catalogue lightning mast different from a custom one?
It’s a standard, pre-calculated solution for the usual 6–40 m heights — faster to manufacture. For non-standard conditions (a different wind region, seismicity or height) we calculate the mast individually.
What coating do the masts have?
Hot-dip galvanising to DSTU EN ISO 1461:2024, coating thickness 80–120 microns.
What height should I give in the questionnaire?
Only the overall height of the mast (item 3); the shaft and air-termination heights are determined by the design (sheet 12).
What are the earthing requirements?
Earthing is carried out to the design, with regard to the Rules for the Arrangement of Electrical Installations (PUE), 2026 edition, and DSTU EN 62305-3; once installation is complete, the earthing circuits are measured (sheet 2, cl. 3.7). If a lightning mast (a lightning rod in the PUE’s wording) stands on its own and protects the open-air switchyard of a substation (abbreviated ВРУ in the PUE), then under PUE (2026 edition), cl. 4.2.165, the resistance of the separate earth electrode of that mast must not exceed 10 ohms, and the distances to the switchyard’s earth electrode (in the ground) and to its earthed structures (through the air) must follow formulas (4.2.7) and (4.2.8) of that clause. If the separate earth electrode does not meet these distances or its resistance exceeds 10 ohms, the mast must be connected to the earth electrode of the switchyard. For a lightning protection system (LPS), informative Annex E to DSTU EN 62305-3:2021 (cl. E.7.2.4) recommends measuring the resistance of each earth electrode separately, with the test joint (a link that can be opened for measurements) between the down-conductor and the electrode disconnected, where one is provided.
Can the mast shaft act as a down-conductor with no separate conductor?
DSTU EN 62305-3:2021 permits it, but on conditions. For a metal mast in an isolated lightning protection system (LPS; the mast stands apart from the structure) the standard requires no extra down-conductors (cl. 5.3.2 a). Under cl. 5.3.5 a), a metal structure may be used as a natural down-conductor if the electrical continuity between its parts is reliable and its cross-sectional area is not smaller than the one given in Table 6 for down-conductors (hot-dip galvanised steel: 50 mm²). Examples of reliable joints in cl. 5.5.3 are welding, brazing, bolts and self-tapping screws; the same clause says the number of joints along a conductor should be kept to a minimum. In the catalogue the section joint is telescopic (see above). Whether the electrical contact in it is sufficient is for the lightning protection design to decide; informative Annex E (cl. E.7.2.4) advises checking continuity by measurement. More: “A Steel Mast as Air Termination and Down Conductor per DSTU EN 62305-3” and “Lightning Protection Inspection and Maintenance: Intervals, Checks, Records”.
Which terrain types are the masts designed for?
Terrain types II–IV for wind action (sheet 2, cl. 2.2); the type is shown by the Roman numeral after the wind region in the mark.
