Roll-Formed Channel Sections: Mass per Metre, Dimensions and Section Properties

The table lists roll-formed channels to GOST 8278-83: height, flange width and wall thickness, cross-sectional area, mass of 1 m, metres per tonne, moments of inertia and resistance. A roll-formed channel is lighter than a hot-rolled one of the same size because its wall is thin. The GOST designations in this article are former standards: most of them have been withdrawn in Ukraine, so check the sizes against the project requirements.

What a roll-formed channel is and how it differs from a hot-rolled one

A hot-rolled channel is rolled while red-hot, and its web and flanges are thick. A roll-formed channel is made on a roll-forming mill: a strip of sheet steel is bent gradually by rolls into a U-shaped section. Web and flanges have the same thickness, and it is small, from 1 to 8 mm in this range.

That is why a roll-formed channel is lighter. For comparison, a hot-rolled No. 10 channel weighs 8.59 kg per metre, while a roll-formed 100×50×4 mm one weighs 5.81 kg per metre. It suits light structures: roof purlins, wall girts, posts and canopy frames. For heavy beams and large loads a hot-rolled channel is used; its sections are given on a separate page.

Roll-formed channels: dimensions and mass of 1 m

A size is written with three numbers: height h, flange width b and thickness s, all in millimetres. 100×50×4 means a channel 100 mm high with 50 mm flanges and 4 mm thickness. The table has 172 sizes: height from 25 to 410 mm, flange width from 20 to 180 mm.

The mass of 1 m and the cross-sectional area are taken from the standard. The “Metres per tonne” column shows how many running metres of the section make a tonne: it is 1000 divided by the mass of 1 m.

Size h×b×s, mm. A is the cross-sectional area. Jx, Wx, ix are the moment of inertia, section modulus and radius of gyration about the x–x axis, perpendicular to the web (load in the plane of the web). Jy, Wy, iy are the same about the y–y axis, parallel to the web. A dash marks a value that could not be confirmed by calculation from the text of the standard.

How to get the mass from the table

Mass is the mass of 1 m times the length. A 100×50×4 mm channel has 5.81 kg per metre, so a six-metre piece weighs about 35 kg. A 200×80×5 mm channel has 13.42 kg per metre, and six metres give about 80.5 kg.

If you buy by weight, look at the “Metres per tonne” column. For 100×50×4 mm it shows 172 m: that much section makes a tonne.

How much does a 100×50×4 roll-formed channel weigh?

A 100×50×4 mm channel weighs 5.81 kg per metre. A six-metre piece is about 35 kg, and a tonne is 172 m.

What do the three numbers in a roll-formed channel designation mean?

The height of the section, the flange width and the wall thickness, in millimetres. For example, 160×60×4 is a channel 160 mm high with 60 mm flanges and a 4 mm wall.

How does a roll-formed channel differ from a hot-rolled one?
