I-beam Sections: Mass of 1 m, Dimensions and Section Properties
The tables list I-beams No. 10–60 with sloped inner flange faces: height, flange width, web and flange thickness and the mass of 1 m. For sizes No. 14–45 and the M-series beams they add the section area, the moments of inertia and resistance, the radii of gyration and the hole positions.

I-beams No. 10–60: dimensions and mass of 1 m
The beam number equals its height in centimetres. The letter “a” in the number marks a profile of the same height with a wider flange.

The mass of 1 m is calculated for a steel density of 7850 kg/m³. The dimensions h, b, s and t are in millimetres; t is the mean flange thickness.
Section properties
The moments of inertia and resistance are needed to check a beam for strength and deflection. The values are given for the sizes of the DSTU 8768:2018 range, where the beams are 12 m long and made of 3ps (S245) steel.

A is the section area; Jy, Wy, iy, Sy are the moment of inertia, section modulus, radius of gyration and first moment of half the section about the y–y axis (the strong axis); Jz, Wz, iz are the same about the z–z axis.

I-beams with parallel flange faces: series B, Sh and K
In I-beams to GOST 26020-83 the inner flange faces are parallel to the outer ones. The number in the designation is the profile height in centimetres, the letter is the series (B normal, Sh wide-flange, K column), and the last digit is the size number within the series. The actual height does not equal the number exactly: 20B1 is 200 mm high and 26B1 is 258 mm.

The mass of 1 m is calculated for a steel density of 7850 kg/m³. The dimensions h, b, s and t are in millimetres.
How to get the mass of a beam from the table
The mass of a beam is its mass per metre times its length. A No. 30 I-beam weighs 36.5 kg/m, so a six-metre beam is 219 kg, and a tonne of this section is 27.4 m long. A No. 20 beam (21 kg/m) gives 47.6 m per tonne.
The “Metres per tonne” column helps when buying by weight: divide the length you need by this figure to get the mass in tonnes.
Where I-beams are used
An I-beam works in bending, so it is used for floor and roof beams, purlins, crane-runway girders and, in built-up sections, frame columns. The M series is meant for suspended tracks: hoists and overhead cranes run on its lower flange.
Calculator and ordering
The mass of any number of I-beams can be worked out in the rolled metal calculator. If you need the beams as part of a structure, send a drawing or a specification: the POLYGONAL company makes steel structures to the customer’s drawings.

I-beam sections: frequently asked questions
How much does a No. 20 I-beam weigh?
A No. 20 I-beam weighs 21 kg per metre, and a No. 20a with a wider flange weighs 22.7 kg. A six-metre No. 20 beam is about 126 kg.
What does the I-beam number mean?
It is the height of the profile in centimetres: a No. 30 beam is 300 mm high. The letter “a” shows that the flange is wider than that of the base profile of this number.
How does an M-series I-beam differ from an ordinary one?
The M series is made for suspended tracks, so the profile has different proportions. The mass of 1 m is 38.3 kg for No. 24M and 57.9 kg for No. 36M.
How do I find how many metres of I-beam make a tonne?
Divide 1000 kg by the mass of 1 m. For a No. 16 beam (15.9 kg/m) it is about 63 m.
